So I did some anoraking which led me to discover that the BMW E46 cars have two window wiper/washing systems one for 1998 to 2002 cars and a different system from 2002/2003 and on. A lot of simple stuff are pretty much the same between the systems EXCEPT the way the rain sensor and automatic wiper/wash functions are relayed and set up.
